Ok this is not the best picture but I'm guessing you get the drift, hat pins not very common place today but back in their time they were a nessisary evil.
Women wore hats always when they left the home and mostly so did men.
I can remember my grandmother telling me about a man who tried to accost her on a tram and she pulled her trusty hat pin out and stuck it into his hand ,that stopped him fairly quickly!
